Hello,
My name is Sarah Zeeman and I live at 2740 Grove Street NE. I purchased my
home in 2006 and still live here today. I grew up in this neighborhood and
as an adult decided to make my first home purchase in Brookhaven for the
quality and safe family oriented neighborhood.
When I saw that the nuts and berries' development requested to build out
an eye sore asphalt commercial parking lot for multiple cars as part of
their request, I was flabbergasted. This land is zoned for houses! This is
a golf/country club residential neighborhood.
So I ask how are the adjoining homes supposed to play with their kids, push
strollers next to an influx of cars weaving in and out? How safe could that
be? Does the risk that this imposes on the families and children balance
out the situation? I don't think so.
So, in the last hearing when nuts and berries was denied a SECOND time, I
ask why not use the former gas station across the street for space sharing
parking if needed on PEACHTREE, a commercial road and not penetrate a
residential neighborhood where commercial use and would place the residents
and their children in harms way.
As recommended, did the nuts and berries owner even ask to utilize the gas
station lot, I doubt it since I never saw anyone use the the gas station
lot to go to nuts and berries, ever.
This is a country club/ golf family neighborhood. It doesn't make any sense
to penetrate it with an asphalt commercial use lot. The adjacent home
values will drop immediately if you are to see a black asphalt lot
with cars and strangers directly outside of their windows.
Isn't this one of the reasons why we have and abide by zoning laws?
My understanding, aren't the zoning laws meant to protect and not to
allow commercial traffic and develop a high density facility a few feet
away from a neighbors' front door and their children's swing set, am I
right?
As local resident and a former real estate agent, I have
seen Brookhaven's consistent growth and the prestigious
residential neighborhood is sought after and this developer wants push
commercial traffic directly adjacent and into my neighbors front door?
That's why we have zoning laws to PREVENT acts like this.
How can their children play, how can the families feel safe? I DO NOT feel
safe with purposely inviting commercial traffic into my
residential neighborhood.
I work in the media and I have seen this type of situation make national
headlines when a city knowingly places families and children into a
risk situation like this.
As a new city, this not something we want to be known for.
Best regards,
Sarah Zeeman
