Brookhaven News, Updates and Resources  The Brookhaven Blast Brookhaven News, Updates and Resources CITY OF BROOKHAVEN NEWS Brookhaven introduces first City-owned street sweeper The purchase of Brookhaven’s first City-owned street sweeper means the Public Works Department’s “Rain Brigade” will soon be paying a visit to all Brookhaven neighborhoods. The City Council approved the purchase of the Public Work Department’s first major piece of heavy equipment in April. “Each year our street sweeping program has diverted 40 tons of debris that would have otherwise ended up in our creeks and waterways,” said Public Works Deputy Director Tom Roberts. “That’s just once a year with our street sweeping contractors. Now that we own this equipment and have trained staff to operate it, we will have the flexibility to clean streets three or four times a year and when specific needs arise.” Full story here. Brookhaven considers 2023 Budget Brookhaven City Manager Christian Sigman submitted the Administration’s recommended 2023 Proposed General Budget to the Mayor and City Council at the regular business meeting on Oct. 25. “The City of Brookhaven is a complex organization that provides services 24/7; maintains an extensive public infrastructure; provides engaging recreational programs; assists property owners in land development and building projects; etc. Through it all, we strive to provide the highest level of customer service, transparency, sound fiscal stewardship, and tangible results,” said Sigman. Michael Lee Johnson named Brookhaven’s Economic Development Director Brookhaven is proud to announce that Michael Lee Johnson is now on board as the City’s Economic Development Director. “This is an exciting opportunity as Brookhaven has a strategic location in the region, a highly educated and motivated workforce, access to transit-oriented development opportunities and innovative leadership that is laser-focused on success,” said Johnson. “The future is bright in Brookhaven!” Full story here. Golf tournament benefits Brookhaven police officers Brookhaven Police Chief Emeritus Gary Yandura and Police Chief Brandon Gurley recently participated in the Brookhaven Police Foundation's 2022 Golf Tournament presented by the Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce. City recognizes swim team accomplishments The Mayor and Council this week recognized the achievements of the Murphey Candler Marlins and Briarwood Barracudas swim team members that competed at the local, district and state meet levels this year.  Brookhaven celebrates COPS grant U.S. Sen. Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) (pictured center) joined Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley, Mayor Pro Tem and District 1 Councilwoman Linley Jones, Lt. Abrem Ayana, Mayor John Ernst, Major Linda Burke, District 3 Councilwoman Madeleine Simmons, District 4 Councilman John Funny and City Manager Christian Sigman at the future site of the new Brookhaven Public Safety Building this week. Officials were marking the announcement of $750,000 in new federal funds for the Brookhaven Police Department. The funding is part of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program and will help the Department hire six new officers. More information here.  Kids take the driver's seat at Brookhaven Touch-A-Truck The popular Brookhaven Touch-A-Truck event returned to Blackburn Park recently for the first time since the pandemic with about 500 children and adults in attendance. The hands-on, educational event offered opportunities for children to explore, climb and touch police cars, fire trucks, maintenance equipment and the City's new street sweeper. ROAD CLOSURES & TRAFFIC ALERTS Emergency Bridge/Road Closure on W. Nancy Creek Drive Effective immediately, the bridge near 1243 W. Nancy Creek Drive in Brookhaven is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. On Friday, July 1, GDOT engineers discovered severe structural issues with the bridge while conducting a routine inspection. The contractor for the City of Brookhaven has started the demolition process of the bridge. The first phase of preparation for the demolition is the relocation of Dekalb County water lines, currently attached to the existing bridge. The City’s Public Works Departme
