The ordinance, effective Oct. 1, authorizes the City Manager and the Human Resources Department to make equity adjustments as needed to ensure Brookhaven remains competitive in the public safety and administrative job markets. “All of our employees are essential for the effective delivery of essential government services. Our police force in particular is the bedrock of our very existence,” said Mayor John Ernst. “They take great care of our community, so we need to be sure we take care of them by staying competitive in the job market.” More info here. Briarwood Recreation Center to close for park renovations With the Brookhaven City Council’s approval Sept. 12 of one of the final Park Bond construction contracts, Briarwood Recreation Center will close for park renovations beginning Oct. 1. “I’m thrilled for our district and the City that we are taking yet another step in our commitment to amazing parks and greenspaces,” said District 2 Councilwoman Jennifer Owens. “Briarwood Park is such an asset to our community. After these improvements, Briarwood Park will be an even better place for the community to gather and enjoy the new and refreshed amenities.” More info here. Historic Lynwood Park unveils final transformation It was a packed house at the Lynwood Recreation Center for the unveiling and dedication of a series of historic monuments and naming dedications on Sept. 12. Mayor John Ernst, Mayor Pro Tempore Linley Jones, and Councilmembers Madeleine Simmons and John Funny cut the ribbon on the newly named Lynwood Park Trail Blazers Community Room. Other dedications included the unveiling of the bronze historic recognition plaque, a historic showcase with memorabilia of the community’s storied history, the dedication of the gymnasium as the Columbus Jones Gymnasium, and the dedication of the newly installed synthetic turf field in memory of longtime community member Emmanual Wallace. Previously installed gateway markers at the roundabout intersection of Windsor Parkway and Osborne Road have been accented with art crosswalks, created by local artist Turiya Clark, who grew up in Lynwood Park. The entrance monuments, identifying the neighborhood of Historic Lynwood Park, were showcased as well in the context of the City of Brookhaven’s 2020 historic designation. More information here. Langford Park shade structures to be installed next week Shade structures will be installed in Langford Park next week instead of Friday, Sept. 15, as planned due to a delay in receiving the materials. Text Link Brookhaven children invited to ‘Pick a Playground’ Brookhaven children are invited to ‘Pick a Playground’ during an event hosted by Mayor Pro Tem and District 1 Councilwoman Linley Jones on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 4 to 6 p.m. in Murphey Candler Park. This event will be similar to the playground planning event held during the park planning process in 2018 that led to the beloved castle playground on the east side of the park today. Children and their families will be able to give input to decide the permanent “tiny tot” playground equipment for very young children at this site. More info here. Brookhaven International Festival 5K to benefit We Love Buford Highway Registration is now open for the Brookhaven International Festival 5K, with all proceeds benefiting We Love Buford Highway. The race takes place on Sunday, Oct. 22, the second day of the Brookhaven International Festival. “What better way to enhance our inaugural International Festival than with a run that benefits We Love Buford Highway,” said District 4 Councilman John Funny. “This festival was created to showcase the diversity of the corridor, and I can think of no better way to honor the rich cultural heritage of Buford Highway, and the City as a whole. This inaugural International Festival will provide a platform for people from different countries and cultures to come together and share their traditions, art, music, dance, food, and other aspects of their cultural heritage.” The 5K is a qualifier for the AJC Peachtree Road Race and is a USATF-certified course. It takes place along the Peachtree Creek Greenway and adjacent parking lots, making it safe for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities.
